Why do I need travel insurance for medical conditions?

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) recommend that you have travel insurance in place every time you travel abroad.

The FCDO have advised: If you do not have appropriate insurance before you travel, you could be liable for emergency expenses, including medical treatment, which may cost thousands of pounds.

Costs of medical treatment abroad can vary per country. According to FCDO statistics:

If you fall in Spain and break your leg, you will need hospital treatment and flights it could cost £15, 000.

If you have a stomach bug or infection treated in a hospital in the USA and need new return flights it could cost £100,000.

What pre-existing medical conditions do I need to declare?

You need to declare any condition for which in the past 2 years you have had:

  • A visit to a medical professional
  • Prescription medication
  • Symptoms
  • Surgery
  • Any medical treatment or investigation

You will also need to declare if you have ever had any stress, anxiety, depression, or psychiatric condition such as eating disorders, drug or alcohol abuse or mental illness for which you have been treated or diagnosed.

How do I declare my pre-existing medical conditions?

You can declare your existing medical conditions to us when you buy travel insurance online or by phone. It will only take a few minutes and in the vast majority of cases we will be able to issue cover immediately.

You will need to tell us the name of your medical conditions and then answer a series of multiple choice questions, such as how your condition has been treated and whether you have had any unplanned hospital visits in the last year - we won't need a doctor's certificate or the names of your medication.

What conditions can be covered?

We can cover all types of medical conditions up to a high level of severity. Common conditions include cancer ,diabetes , asthma stroke, heart conditions , autoimmune conditions, mental health conditions, arthritis , alzheimers and many more.

Additional medical expenses cover (Silver, Gold & Platinum policies)

Because we specialise in providing travel insurance for medical conditions we provide extra cover which other insurers rarely include in their policies.
