Travel Insurance for Students

Taking a gap year or studying overseas? Our travel insurance for students has got you covered.

What is travel insurance for students?

Whether you're taking a break from your studies to travel or you're going abroad to study, travel insurance may be important if you're a student.

It can protect you from all the stuff that regular travel insurance covers you for along with inbuilt clauses that can be helpful if you're a student. This includes cover for additional expenses like flights if your trip is interrupted and the sole reason for your trip was to study abroad.

We understand that as a student you won't want travel insurance to cost much. Don't worry, you can still be covered for things like medical expenses without having to fork out loads from your budget.

Why should I consider travel insurance as a student?

Travelling solo for the first time or going on a big trip with friends can seem daunting when you're a student.

If you're trying to travel on a shoestring, it can be hard to part with your limited dollars for something like travel insurance, especially if you're only going away for a few weeks. But things out of your control can happen and the cost of repairing, replacing or recovering your stuff or the bills you potentially face could be more expensive without insurance than with it.

Benefits of travel insurance

You're best off having a look at what's covered (and what's not) in our policy, but let's run through some of the specific things you can be covered for if you're a student travelling overseas.

Medical bills

Getting ill away from home is stressful enough without having to worry about all the extra costs a trip to the hospital could bring. Our policies can cover you for overseas medical bills and repatriation if you need to travel back to Australia.

Luggage

You can get up to $12,000 worth of coverage for your luggage and personal items if they are stolen, permanently lost or accidentally damaged due to circumstances outside of your control.

Additional cover options available for students

For some, a trip is not a trip unless there are some adrenaline-pinching adventures involved. For others, it's all about capturing every moment on camera. If you know the sorts of activities you'll be doing, or the techy kit you'll be taking, you can upgrade your cover with customisable options tailored to the things we know young travellers value. For an additional premium, you can add one or more when you book your travel insurance – easy!

Extra cover for your valuable items

While our policy covers some valuable electronic items like cameras, laptops and phones, you may wish to add extra cover for specific items above our standard limits. This can include a musical instrument, sports gear and tech gadgets.

Sports & activities travel insurance

From paddle boarding to zorbing, travelling is the best time to jump head first into trying new things. We can provide cover for many different sports and activities. This is a brief summary of cover only and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions. Read the PDS before purchasing.

Snow sports cover option

Shooting down the slopes can be thrilling but it can also bring broken bones. Whether you're off to learn how to ski or you're a seasoned powder-shredding pro, you can add Snow sports cover option for an additional premium to your trip.

What destinations are covered?

Some of the most popular places amongst travelling students are:

Bali

With a short(ish) flight from Australia, hospitable locals, and little budget required, Bali is the perfect paradise to unwind and explore. But thieves, dodgy food and scooter crashes could be around any corner.

Europe

Europe is the best place to hop from one country to the next, immersing yourself in the language, food and landmarks along the way. While many culturally curious Aussies choose to become international students here, even a short jaunt to Europe is an educational journey for any young traveller.

USA

With no language barrier, good quality education and plenty of new faces, it's no wonder so many Australian students head to the USA to experience the schools there. But with Cali, Washington and the Big Apple, there's a lot of bucket list ticking to do, too.

We don't cover everything though, so it's important you understand the policy exclusions and read the PDS.

Student travel insurance FAQs

Am I covered for Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

All international plans include cover for overseas medical expenses. Depending on the plan you choose, there may also be cover available for some other Coronavirus related events. Cover is explained in detail here.

What if my child is travelling alone and is under 18 years old? Are there any restrictions?

You can purchase a policy from TID on behalf of your child even if they are under the age of 18 and travelling solo; just provide their details where we ask about the adult travellers.
They will be entitled to all benefits of the policy, as per the terms and conditions.

I’m an international student, studying in Australia. Can I buy a policy?

Unfortunately, no. These policies are only available to citizens and residents of Australia. If you don’t meet our definition of an Australian resident, you can’t buy a policy from us.

What if I’m moving overseas to study because I got a scholarship?

This might not be the best option for you, if something goes seriously wrong, we will look to repatriate you back to Australia rather than treat you overseas. Especially for an injury that requires surgery and rehab, that may interfere with your studies.
