Frequently Asked Questions

How does CountAbout work?

Sign up to get started with a FREE trial to receive CountAbout Premium for 45 days. If, after 45 days, you would like to continue using CountAbout, you will be given the opportunity to subscribe to either Basic or Premium service. CountAbout works either online or through the app available on Android or iOS. Our platform helps you to independently manage your financial future without relying on accountants with our easy to use budget and spending planners with custom categories.

CountAbout Premium provides full access to all CountAbout functions, including automatic downloading of banking, credit card, and other financial transactions.

Can I migrate historical financial data from Quicken or Mint?

Yes, CountAbout is the only web-based personal finance software that imports data from Quicken or Mint. You can also import QIF files downloaded from your bank.

Can CountAbout link to my bank?

CountAbout Premium subscribers can set up their accounts to automatically download transactions from participating financial institutions. We currently support thousands of banks and other financial institutions. If your financial institution isn’t listed, and if it’s a U.S. financial institution, ask us to add it by logging into CountAbout and contacting support.

How do you keep critical information such as my banking passwords secure?

Users’ privacy and security is of utmost importance, and CountAbout protects your personal and financial information in several ways.

The only personal identifying information we collect from our users is their email addresses. We don’t give or sell these addresses to advertisers or anyone else. We don’t collect or store users’ names, phone numbers, physical addresses, social security numbers, birth dates, driver’s license numbers, mothers’ maiden names, names of first pets, favorite foods, or any other personal information about our users.

We do not store users’ financial institution usernames, passwords, or other login credentials. Like all other financial management software companies, we use a secure third-party service called a data aggregator, which links financial institutions with companies like CountAbout. When you link to a financial institution through CountAbout, it is this data aggregator, called MX, that accesses your login credentials at your financial institution and establishes a link to CountAbout. CountAbout never sees this information, and there is no way for us to access it if we wanted to.

The financial information that you enter into CountAbout or that is downloaded from your financial institutions is encrypted. This means that if our servers were somehow breached, no one would be able to access our users’ financial information.

Finally, just like banks do, CountAbout stores our data in the cloud. Your information is always backed up in Amazon Web Services’ secure data center. This is much more secure than keeping your financial information on a hard drive.

What if I decide to quit using CountAbout? Is my financial information stuck there?

No. You can export your data to a .csv file anytime, with a single click. This is the kind of file you could open in a spreadsheet program.

What is GDPR and is CountAbout compliant?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new European privacy law due that became enforceable on May 25, 2018. The GDPR replaced the EU Data Protection Directive, also known as Directive 95/46/EC, and is intended to harmonize data protection laws throughout the European Union (EU) by applying a single data protection law that is binding throughout each member state.

Although CountAbout does not provide its services to European customers we 100% support the privacy and security that GDPR represents. Hence, CountAbout is pleased to say that if we operated in the EU we would be compliant with GDPR.

Do you have a user manual?

No. For more detailed information about how to use CountAbout, log into CountAbout and visit our Help page.

Will you sell my data?

Absolutely not. We won’t mine, analyze, sell, barter, or give away your data to anyone.

Why does CountAbout cost money?

We have chosen a subscription-based business model to ensure that our users’ financial and personal information can be kept private. Advertising-supported websites require that users give up a degree of privacy in exchange for free service. Our subscribers’ data are not for sale.

CountAbout offers two types of subscriptions: Standard ($9.99/year) and Premium ($39.99/year). The only difference between them is that with a Premium subscription, you can automatically download transactions from your financial institutions. (This is also how the 15-day trial is set up.) With a Basic account, you must enter transactions manually.

I need tech support, how can I get in touch with CountAbout?

For security reasons, you must initiate support services via email. We promise to respond swiftly and can communicate by phone after initial contact, if necessary.

Will you be adding more features?

Yes. We will continue to improve CountAbout based partly on feature requests. To make a feature suggestion, log into CountAbout and visit our Help page.

Can I download CountAbout onto my computer?

No. CountAbout is web-based software. Users do not need to download any program or application on their computer. To access CountAbout, just open a web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer) and visit CountAbout.com.
