Demon’s story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking ‘like a little blue prizefighter.’ For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty and addiction aren’t ideas. They’re as natural as the grass grows. For Demon, born on the wrong side of luck, the affection and safety he craves is as remote as the ocean he dreams of seeing one day. The wonder is in how far he’s willing to travel to try and get there.

Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, Demon Copperhead is an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.

Probably the best book I’ve ever listened to.

You’re in for a emotional ride. You are in this story with the characters. Truly a masterpiece.

Compelling, tender, absorbing and gut- wrenching

A fantastic update of boy-against-the-world bildingsroman. A modern-day dickensian portrait of a community battling poverty, generational trauma, and state/pharma sponsored addiction. The character of Demon is celebrated for his resilience, charm and intelligence, but so are many others in this epic story. I have ignored my family, work and responsibilities for the last three days as I have been fully absorbed in this wonderful story.

Brilliant Tale

Everything about this story is wonderful. The main character is compelling, the writing is top notch and the narrator brings it all to life. Barbara Kingsolver is a master craftswoman, this story could have got bogged down but it was well paced. I loved Demon and was rooting for his the whole way through. it also gave me a great insight into the region and my assumptions about people from there.

Very brilliant.

I really loved this book. Barbara Kingsolver at her best or at least one of her best. Very well read, I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

Just Wow!

This might be my book of the year! And it’s only January. Can’t imagine anything topping it. Narration was also superb.

Fifteen words not enough

The narration was fittingly executed! BTW if you read the Telegraph review, ignore it .

Encapsulating

A real insight into middle America and the troubles children /young people
they endure in the care system I. 90’s America. Beautifully written exposing the beauty and the dark side of the southern states including the private drug companies targeting poor areas and the devastating effects on youth addiction. Loved the highs and the lows didn’t want it to end.

I loved it! Worth every minute!

Few books carry you along as intensely on the main character's 'wild ride'. You want to cry or giggle on every page and explode with worry for the tender heart of this young man.

A different life

This is all rather a depressing trailer trash tale of life.

You re immersed in the lives of those who seem like scraps from the bottom of the barrel. But they are real and palpable, all well drawn characters who get under your skin that you find you start to care about them.
Demon really is one of those characters and what a god awful life he was given to start with.
Throughout te book, you do get to wonder when things might be a bit more upbeat but somehow you just get used to the drudgery.

The narrator was very good, however I have a real dislike of American narrators so it would take 10 minutes of coping with fingernails down a blackboard but that really is personal to me and does not spoil anything.

Ms Kingsolver is a talented author, but this is quite depressing,
